Paul Merson believes that Chelsea should be worried about the lack of quality in two key positions after their loss to Man City in the opening round of the 2024/25 Premier League.
Enzo Maresca’s team needs to step up their efforts after an easy defeat to the reigning Premier League champions in the Italian coach’s first official match at Stamford Bridge. The West London club spent heavily this summer, bringing in 10 more players.
However, according to Paul Merson, The Blues are still missing a reliable goalkeeper and a sharp striker. The former Arsenal midfielder shared with Sky Sports: “The two most important things to win are a goalkeeper and a striker – no one can win without a top goalkeeper, and you need a quality center-forward.
Chelsea are always at risk of dropping points because they lack a good goalkeeper. They also miss many chances; they need a player like Erling Haaland. He only touched the ball three times at Stamford Bridge, but he scored. I’d rather he scored a goal than touch the ball 1,600 times without scoring.”
Summer signing Filip Jorgensen may replace Sanchez as goalkeeper, while Chelsea have confirmed the return of Joao Felix as they look to strengthen their attacking options. When asked about Chelsea signing Joao Felix, the Arsenal legend added:
“First of all, it’s because he’s a good player. He’s talented, and Chelsea have already had time with him. What’s good about Joao is that he can play in different positions. He can play centrally, he can play as a number 9, he can play out wide.”
