The star who just won the European Championship with the Spanish national team has made a choice that disappoints PSG and Barca.
Nico Williams may extend his contract with Bilbao.
El Mundo reveals that Nico Williams has decided to stay at Athletic Bilbao and has not ruled out the possibility of renewing his contract with the Basque club. This move comes after Barca, the young winger’s preferred destination, faced financial difficulties.
Previously, AS reported that Athletic Bilbao was preparing a new contract to keep Nico Williams at the club. The Basque club is ready to offer the player a record salary in the club’s history, significantly higher than the 200,000 euros per week he is currently earning.
Bilbao is eager for Williams to sign a new contract, with a release clause that could reach 90-100 million euros. In fact, Bilbao had just signed a three-year contract with the player (until June 2027) at the end of last year.
However, the 58 million euro release clause in the current contract between Bilbao and Nico Williams is considered no longer suitable, given that the player has just won the European Championship.
Nico Williams prefers to stay in Spain to play, despite receiving many promises from PSG. Catalunya Radio reports that PSG’s management promised to pay Nico Williams double the salary offered by Barca or Bilbao.
Coach Luis Enrique sees Nico Williams as a priority target in this summer’s transfer market. However, Nico Williams’ move has led PSG to shift their attention to Jadon Sancho.
According to RMC, last season’s Ligue 1 champions received optimistic signals from Manchester United and could finalize the Sancho deal in the near future. As for Barca, if they fail to secure Nico Williams, it will be their biggest failure of this summer’s transfer window.
