After a long period of negotiations, Newcastle abandoned the Kalvin Phillips deal because of too high demands from Man City.

One of the issues Man City really wants to resolve in this winter transfer window is the future of Kalvin Phillips. The Citizens hope to loan or sell the English midfielder outright. The liquidation of Phillips seemed to go smoothly when Newcastle showed great interest in the former Leeds United star. However, this deal eventually broke down.

Specifically, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle’s big bosses believe that the Phillips loan deal is not financially reasonable. The Magpies are not satisfied with the loan fee for the 28-year-old striker requested by Man City (7 million pounds). Besides, The Magpies are also not comfortable with the mandatory buyout clause next summer.

Not to mention, Newcastle may have to pay part or all of Kalvin Phillips’ salary (150 thousand pounds/week). The above factors have caused the upper floor of St. James’ Park decided to abandon the loan deal of the English striker.

Although Newcastle withdrew from this deal, Man City is still confident that they will find a place for Phillips. Currently, Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham are monitoring the situation of the 28-year-old midfielder. In addition, a big Serie A giant, Juventus, also really wants to serve Phillips. However, these are all teams that do not have as strong financial potential as Newcastle. If Man City still maintains the above requirements, it will be difficult for them to liquidate the English star soon.

For his part, Kalvin Phillips does not want to leave Man City. This midfielder was recruited by The Citizens from Leeds in the summer of 2022 for 42 million pounds. At Etihad, Phillips cannot compete with Rodri for a position. Even when coach Pep Guardiola used an additional defensive midfielder, he chose John Stones instead of Phillips.

This season, Man City recruited Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes. Along with the progress of Rico Lewis, Phillips’ future at Etihad is almost closed. In 10 appearances this season, the 28-year-old striker only started 2 matches.
